The winter indoor track season is short. Teams first hit the track on December 1, and the county championships are held just seven weeks later, on January 23. Factor in the inevitable missed practices and meets due to holiday breaks and polar vortexes and bomb cyclones, and every meet becomes a crucial opportunity to improve.

Such was the case on December 29, when the Severna Park and Broadneck track and field teams competed in the 25-school Anne Arundel County Invitational at Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex against fellow county schools and other teams from around the state.

The Falcons fared well on both the boys and girls sides, finishing as the overall runner-up and the top county school in both team contests. Howard High School took first place on the boys side, while Northern-Calvert High School took first on the girls side.

Emily Knight led the effort for the Severna Park girls, winning the 300-meter dash in 42.30 seconds. Teammate Izzy Kinztley placed third in the 300m. Catie Cambon placed third in both the 800m and 1600m runs. Katie Soverns was sixth in the 500m dash. Kamryn Eveleth, Kelsie O’Neill and Sophia Zell finished six-seven-eight in the 3200m run to all bank points for the Falcons. Chloe Macdonald cleared five feet to place second in high jump. Sarah Adams placed fourth in pole vault, clearing 8 feet, 6 inches.

On the boys side, Jonah Lane won the 1600m run in 4:26.68, while Garrison Clark was third and Alexander Chaisson was fifth. Lane was also fourth in the 700m run, in which teammate William Reed placed seventh. Sam Martin took second in the 3200m run, while Sean Engelfried placed sixth and Jack Finnerin placed seventh. Max Boettinger was third in the 55m hurdles. Kyle Jefferds placed fourth in high jump, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches. Joe Jennings placed seventh in shot put. Ben Dearing placed sixth in pole vault, clearing 10 feet, 6 inches.

Elian Ahmar was Broadneck’s top finisher on the day, winning shot put with a throw of 53 feet, 8.25 inches, almost nine full feet farther that the runner-up throw.
