Every year the Anne Arundel Youth Football Association presents the Buzz Platt Player Award to a select group of 13U players. One 13U player from each organization receives the award, which is named after the founder of the AAYFA, in recognition of his excellence in play, character and sportsmanship.

This year, the recipients from the Severna Park Voice readership area are the Green Hornets’ Declan Fox, the Severn Seminoles’ James Henson III and the Cape St. Claire Cougars’ Josh Ehrlich.

The players were presented their awards in a ceremony at Chesapeake High School in Pasadena on November 11.

Fox has played Green Hornets football for eight years, starting at the 70-lbs select level.

Green Hornets 13U offensive coordinator Rich Prengaman praised Fox as a team leader on and off the field who brings out the best in his teammates.

“I’ve coached at many levels at the Green Hornets, and players like Declan are what coaches need if the team is going to come together and succeed,” said Prengaman. “In practice, Declan always gave it his all and challenged his teammates to do the same. He has been asked to play many positions, not always the glamorous ones, always where the team needed him. … Declan always brought them together and kept them pumped up. It is great to see that kind of enthusiasm. I can’t wait to see Declan take it to the next level in high school.”

James Henson III, a student at Severna Park Middle School, was selected by his Severn commissioner, Stephen Lloyd, and head coach Reggie Leach to receive the Buzz Platt Player Award for his dedication to being a dependable and trustworthy team player.

“[James] has always been a focused and goal-oriented achiever on and off the field since his arrival in fall of 2013,” said Lloyd. “He’s an unselfish motivator who always puts forth the extra effort to be better than he was the previous day. His work ethic is contagious and elevates the performance of those around him. James has shown outstanding leadership amongst his peers, great sportsmanship to the opposing teams and respect to all coaching staff, so his [award] is well deserved.”

Ehrlich was commended by Cape St. Claire coach Paul D’Imperio for his intangibles as a leader.

“Josh has demonstrated great leadership on and off the field for our team from the day he stepped into the Cape organization,” said D’Imperio. “He is a tremendously bright individual with a great future in front of him.”
