For its June Educator of the Month, the Board of Education selected Severna Park High School’s Geoff Bernstein, who started with Anne Arundel County Public Schools in 2010.

As stated by members of the board, Bernstein’s passion for technology education has been shared through his innovative teaching styles that highlight project-based learning, collaborative groups, real-world problem solving, Socratic questioning and the relentless nature with which he inspires his students to push themselves beyond their comfort zones when it comes to their education.

Whether on one of his many inspirational field trips, or teaching Foundations of Technology A/B, Intro to Robotics Engineering, Civil Engineering and Architecture, or Principles of Engineering, Bernstein is the “Swiss army knife” teacher in his department.

Beyond his teaching duties, Bernstein also sponsors the SPHS Technology Student Association club; is the Technology Student Association state coordinator; is the sponsor for the Architecture and Civil Engineering Mentorship Club; and is one of the teachers involved with SPHS’s Student Run Business – SP Customs (a student-run screen-printing business.)

Personally, he has a passion for family life and photography. A new dad and a professional photographer, Bernstein often works nights and weekends with clients for weddings and events. He is always ready to assist in many facets of everyday school life. Whether tearing down a set with the drama department or assisting yearbook staff, he enhances a variety of programs outside his department, thereby adding to the extracurricular activities at SPHS on a daily basis.

The board also praised Bernstein for being approachable and readily available to help any teacher, administrator, student or parent in any manner necessary. Students are lucky to have such a passionate and inspiring teacher who leads through his example of determination, humor, empathy and resilience.
