Every month in Anne Arundel County, it seems as though we are breaking ground on a wonderful new asset that will help our jurisdiction reach its full potential. In fact, over the past year alone, we have broken ground on a new Crofton High School, three new elementary schools, and a host of park improvements at Fort Smallwood and Downs parks.

This past month was no different as I was honored to attend the groundbreaking for our new, state-of-the-art police academy. When we came to office three years ago, one of the first things we committed to addressing was the deplorable condition of the current academy. A first-class police department deserves a first-class police academy and training center.

This commitment became a reality December 6 as we broke ground on the new $18.8 million police academy, which will train the next generation of law enforcement in this county. The 30,000-square-foot facility will train new recruits to the Anne Arundel County Police Department, as well as personnel from the Sheriff’s Office and other regional law enforcement agencies.

This academy project is a bricks-and-mortar example of the public safety investments we have made over the last three years. We have undertaken a major effort to improve our public safety infrastructure, including the academy, the development of a central booking facility and four new fire stations. We have also increased the number of public safety personnel by 41 to combat gangs and improve response times. We have also accelerated the purchases of new police vehicles to bring the average age of our fleet down to three years.

Each one of these investments is helping protect our citizens and improve our quality of life. With every brick we lay as we build this crucial police infrastructure, we demonstrate how important public safety is to Anne Arundel County and its citizens. And I look forward to the future as this new academy trains the next generation of our protectors.
