Every summer, there’s a drop in blood donations, but the need for lifesaving blood never drops off. Anne Arundel Medical Center is asking for help keeping its supplies of blood at a healthy level. According to Mike Misulich, blood donor recruitment coordinator for AAMC, donations drop sharply after Memorial Day when summer schedules, vacations and school breaks lead to a decline in blood donations. During the summer months, more people are outside being active and having fun. While this is always encouraged, it also means there are more people injuring themselves and potentially in need of blood transfusions. In addition, since people are out of town or enjoying the nice weather, there are less people lining up to give blood.

“Accidents and medical emergencies don't take a summer break,” Misulich said. “Patients need blood every minute, every day.” AAMC is in desperate need of O positive, A negative and O negative blood. You can help save lives by being a donor at a special blood drive sponsored by Pam Negron, owner of the agency representing Farmers Insurance; Theresa Kurtz, realtor with RE/MAX in Annapolis; and Jennifer Stevens, owner of the Account Ability, an accounting firm in Edgewater. The AAMC Bloodmobile will be available for donors on July 18 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm in the parking lot of Farmers Insurance, located at 1300 Ritchie Highway in Arnold.
