Summer is here! June 21 marked the official beginning of summer, that magical time of the year when popsicles appear in the freezer, crabs are on the picnic table and fireflies light up the evening sky. The hum of a lawnmower is always in the background, and the excitement of summer camp and Vacation Bible School is brewing. It’s a special time for sure.

One of our summer traditions in the Greater Severna Park area is the Fourth of July Parade. We hope you’ll join us at 10:00am on Tuesday, July 4, for this community event. If you have little ones and they’d like to participate in their own age-appropriate event, we have the Decorated Bike Contest. As far as I know, this event is unique to our parade in Severna Park. The Decorated Bike Contest is held in front of the chamber office at 1 Holly Avenue. Registration will be open from 9:15am to 10:00am, and the street will be closed to traffic to create a safe area for the contest and activities. Children are encouraged to decorate their bikes, tricycles and wagons, and enter the contest. The categories for judging include Most Original, Most Beautiful and Most Patriotic. Prizes will be awarded, courtesy of Pedal Pushers Bicycle Shop, Franklin’s Toys and KinderCare Learning Center. The winners lead off as the participants enter the parade and ride to the culmination area behind Sunrise of Severna Park. Bike helmets are required. There will be face painting, a “fishing pond” and crafts for the kids while they wait for the parade to begin. There’s no fee to participate, and it’s fun! If you have questions, call the chamber at 410-647-3900 or email info@severnaparkchamber.com.

Those old enough to ride their bikes for the entire parade route can join the Bike Brigade, which forms at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church. For more information, and a copy of the parade rules, email us at info@severnaparkchamber.com or call us at 410-647-3900.

I’d like to acknowledge our parade sponsors this year! Their support means so much! Chick-fil-A of Severna Park and Severn Bank are Platinum sponsors for the chamber and they lead off the parade. We also have Freedom-level sponsors and Independence-level sponsors.
